In 536 A.D., the Northern Hemisphere plunged into an eighteen-month winter. Byzantine historian Procopius recorded: "a most dread portent took place." The Norse called it Fimbulwinter.
The Science
Ice core samples confirm catastrophic volcanic activity in 536 A.D. The eruption threw massive sulfate aerosols into the stratosphere, blocking sunlight and causing a "nuclear winter" effect.
