In 2390 B.C., priests of Ur recorded a celestial event that would echo through mythology for millennia. They described a serpent of fire that devoured stars, its tongue leaving trails of blue flame across the heavens. Modern astronomy confirms: it was Comet Halley's passage.
The Science
What they called "the tongue of Abzuth" was hydrogen cyanide ionized in the comet's tail. What they called "blood of the sky" was atmospheric refraction through cosmic dust.
