Norse sailors whispered of the Kraken — a beast so vast it could be mistaken for an island. When it submerged, it created whirlpools that swallowed entire fleets.
The Science
The giant squid (Architeuthis dux) can reach 13 meters. While not island-sized, sightings of massive squid at the surface — rare but documented — could inspire Kraken legends. Underwater earthquakes also create sudden whirlpools.
