Canaanite mythology describes Tannin as a sea dragon of chaos, enemy of the storm god Baal. Their battles represented the eternal struggle between order and primordial darkness.
The Science
The eastern Mediterranean experiences severe winter storms. Waterspouts — tornadoes over water — could easily be interpreted as serpents rising from the sea, especially when accompanied by lightning.
