Persian mythology tells of Azdaha, a three-headed dragon whose venom could melt stone. Kings feared it, heroes hunted it, and poets immortalized it in the Shahnameh.
The Science
Volcanic vents release sulfuric acid and hydrogen sulfide — toxic gases that kill vegetation and corrode rock. Ancient Persia sat near volcanic regions of the Zagros Mountains.
